When Microsoft comes knocking: A new chapter with Subscription Billing.

August 26, 2025

In 2021, Microsoft approached us with an opportunity that would reinforce our trajectory.

By 2021, our team at Binary Stream had spent more than two decades building ERP extensions that simplify the complex: solutions for billing, lease management, and consolidation that worked seamlessly with Microsoft Dynamics platforms.

One of the fastest-growing areas we’d been investing in was subscription billing. The recurring revenue model was taking over in industry after industry, and we saw first-hand how tough it was for companies to keep up, especially those trying to adapt legacy processes to modern pricing models like usage-based, tiered, or hybrid subscriptions.

That insight led us to build Subscription Billing Suite (SBS), a comprehensive solution embedded in Dynamics 365 Finance. SBS allowed businesses to manage everything from contract creation to revenue deferrals and compliance with ASC 606 and IFRS 15, all within the ERP they were already using.

What we didn’t expect? That Microsoft would want it, too.

The Microsoft licensing deal.

In 2021, Microsoft approached us with an opportunity that would reinforce our trajectory but also change the game—for us, and for thousands of organizations running Dynamics 365 Finance. They wanted to license Subscription Billing Suite exclusively and make it available as part of their own offering.

This was Microsoft placing a bet on a homegrown ISV solution and giving us the opportunity to help shape how complex billing and revenue management would evolve within Dynamics 365 Finance.

From day one, the alignment made sense. SBS plugged a major gap in Microsoft’s offering, extending core financials with robust support for recurring billing and recognition. And for us, it meant we could focus on what we do best: developing cutting-edge features, supporting global compliance, and collaborating with Microsoft and our partner network to roll out those capabilities at scale.

Why it mattered.

On the surface, this milestone was about technology. And at its core, it was. But for us, it was also about trust and long-term vision

The demand for more sophisticated billing tools wasn’t slowing down. Enterprises across every industry—from software to manufacturing to healthcare—were rethinking their revenue models. Subscription Billing Suite gave Microsoft a way to meet those customers where they were headed, with functionality that supported their evolving needs.

For Binary Stream, it validated years of product innovation and gave our team an even stronger reason to keep pushing forward.

As our Director of Development, Jasbir Jaswal, put it at the time:

“The combination of Subscription Billing Suite and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance creates a compelling cloud solution that is in demand across a wide range of industries.”

It also allowed us to double down on our role in the Microsoft ecosystem, beyond just as an ISV, to being a strategic partner helping enterprises modernize how they recognize revenue, manage compliance, and build scalable business models.

Still just getting started.

The Microsoft licensing deal marked a new beginning for the Subscription Billing story and our company as a whole.

We’re continuing to evolve the solution alongside Microsoft, with new features that support usage-based pricing, smarter automation, and stronger reporting. And as subscription models become the norm, our job remains the same: to help businesses handle complexity with confidence.

We like to think of it as building the future of finance, one billing cycle at a time.
